Leading Practices in International Shipping Decarbonization

International shipping accounts for over 80% of global merchandise trade by volume, yet its massive scale generates significant greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions. These environmental and health pressures, coupled with rising climate concerns, are driving the shipping sector toward a green transition—from voluntary measures to globally mandated emission reductions.

This study examines both major shipowners and dry-bulk and tanker charterers, with representative companies including industry frontrunners such as Maersk (A.P. Moller-Maersk), CMA CGM, Cargill, and Fortescue. By analyzing key drivers and challenges, together with decarbonization pathways, the report highlights differentiated roles within the value chain. The report aims to provide evidence-based insights for shipping companies, ports, cargo owners, and other stakeholders, thereby supporting informed policy and investment decisions, facilitate knowledge exchange, and encourage cross-sector collaboration in the green transition of the shipping industry.
