Background
VOCs are a component of air pollution that includes a complex mixture of hundreds of carbon-containing gases. VOCs also include a wide variety of chemicals, some of which can cause short- and long-term adverse health effects. However, due to the unique characteristics of VOCs and the relatively high cost of measurement, VOC monitoring and its related activities in the Acid Deposition.
Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) region are still at an early stage. To understand the VOCs monitoring and analysis status in the EANET, provide the necessary capacity building for the EANET Participating Countries, and eventually establish a network for VOC monitoring within EANET, the Network Center (NC) for the EANET under the guidance of the project lead, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) has launched the EANET project “Promotion of VOCs Related Capacity Building in EANET” (hereinafter referred to as the EANET VOCs Project).
This project starts with the feasibility study in 2023, and implement full-scale activities from 2024 to 2026 in accordance with its plans approved by the Intergovernmental Meeting (IG) of the EANET in the respective years. In order to provide a complete understanding of VOCs related activities from monitoring design to policy implementation, and in line with the EANET VOCs Project plan, which was approved by the IG 24, the NC for the EANET organizes this workshop to promote public awareness for VOCs related activities. This workshop will gather different stakeholders (scientists and researchers, government officers, technicians including QA/QC managers, the representative of an international organization) together and invite them to discuss from different perspectives.
The workshop aims to foster comprehensive understanding and collaboration in the field of VOCs by bringing together experts, researchers, and practitioners in a multidisciplinary platform. Through focused sessions starting from monitoring, to modeling, and finally reaching the control policies, the workshop enhances knowledge exchange and advancements in VOC-related activities. By addressing challenges, sharing insights, and showcasing innovative strategies, the workshop seeks to drive sustainable solutions for VOC management, minimizing environmental impacts, and promoting effective regulatory measures. This activity is implemented by the EANET project funded by Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) through the EANET Project Fund.
Objectives
This workshop aims to provide knowledge for the whole process of VOCs relate activities, which includes:
- How to conduct the VOCs sampling at monitoring station and how to analyze the VOCs samples with the instruments at the laboratory,
- How to evaluate the contribution from VOCs to PM2.5 and Ozone,
- How to formulate the air quality guidelines including VOCs, and
- How to implement the control policy of the VOCs emission.
