Clean Air Asia has been working in China since 2002 to improve air quality management (AQM) and promote green transport. Our China office was officially registered as a foreign NGO in China in March 2018, with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment as our professional supervisory organization.

We have been promoting science-based AQM in China for 15 years and were the first NGO to establish a city AQM network throughout the country. Our AQM capacity building program oers national and local environmental policymakers and technical sta various forms of support, including training workshops and materials, technical manuals, on-site expert guidance, and an online knowledge hub. To date, the program has supported more than 150 Chinese cities and established five regional platforms to build the capacity of cities, promote learning between cities, and provide input into national policymaking.

We further promote Chinese city actions and policymaking with the annual “China Air - Air Pollution Prevention and Control Progress in Chinese Cities” report. The annual reports objectively monitor the development and implementation of national, regional and municipal policies that have been enacted since the release of China’s 2013 Air Pollution Control and Prevention Action Plan, and also track ambient air quality in more than 300 Chinese cities. The first in this series of annual reports was launched in 2015, and in 2018 a special series report, “Breakthroughs: China’s Path to Clean Air 2013-2017”, was launched to summarize and analyze major policies and control measures undertaken by China from 2013-2017.

To promote green transport, we have focused on reducing freight sector emissions in China since 2008.We initiated green freight pilot projects in China in 2008, and have established and run a national green freight development program - the China Green Freight Initiative - to raise the awareness of policymakers and large carriers, and conducted pilot projects in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders from 2012-2016. Since 2016, we have reached out to truck drivers, the media and local NGOs to help reduce emissions from diesel trucks and vessels through the Mr. Trucker Campaign, the Clean Diesel Campaign, and the BlueGull Partnership.
