Power to the Pedal

Congestion, rising fuel prices, air pollution and worries over carbon emissions are causing residents of European cities to fall in love with the bicycle again, after decades in which they embraced the car. Even London, with its notoriously creaking public transport network, is trying to re-establish its cycle-friendly credentials. Boris Johnson, the city's high-profile mayor who bikes to work, is leading the charge.

Lise Bjørg Pedersen, secretary of the cycling embassy of Denmark., says: "No other single activity can simultaneously improve general health conditions and fitness, reduce pollution, carbon dioxide emissions and help tackle congestion. That is why countries around the world now want to re-introduce the bicycle as a means of daily transportation."
